One workshop per month: July 9, August 13, September 10, October 22

No prior experience necessary!

Each session will focus on one particular structure or style that can  be completed in one session, using a variety of techniques and  materials.

Cost: $150.00 per session, including materials (payment due upon registration)

Michele Burgess works in book arts, printmaking,  painting, and sculpture. She received her MFA at the Cranbrook Academy  of Art. She is the Director of Brighton Press and collaborates with  other artists and poets on projects that involve the book as an art  medium. For the past four decades, her work has explored palimpsest,  time and gesture, erasure, and “repair,” currently within a series  called “The Stratigraphic Archives.” Burgess’s artist’s books are housed  in over seventy-five public collections across the country, including  the Achenbach Foundation for the Graphic Arts in San Francisco, Houghton  Library Special Collections at Harvard University, Lilly Library at  Indiana University, Minneapolis Institute of Art, National Museum of  Women in the Arts, the New York Public Library, the University of  Vermont, Stanford University Library, and the Toledo Art Museum. Burgess  has served as guest lecturer, curator, and artist-in-residence at  numerous museums, universities, and arts organizations, such as the  Getty Research Institute and the Library of Congress. Exhibitions of her  books include the Musee d’Art Americain in Giverny, France, Fresno Art  Museum, Cranbrook Art Museum, Craft and Folk Art Museum in Los Angeles,  and the Mingei International Museum of Folk and Craft art in San Diego.  Her work was recently featured in Artists and Their Books / Books and  Their Artists by Marsha Reid and Glenn Phillips (Getty Research  Institute, 2018). Burgess taught for many years in the art departments  at San Diego State University and the University of San Diego, as well  as the Putney School Summer Arts Programs under the direction of Brian  Cohen. She is currently a Faculty Associate and Teaching Artist for the  Prison Arts Collective.
